When is my due date? That’s the question every woman wants answered during pregnancy. You want to know exactly when you will be able to look at that beautiful little face. How Many Weeks Pregnant Am I? You may want to know the answer to that question for several different reasons. Maybe you want to search for pictures of a fetus in that same stage of growth in order to see how developed your baby should be at this point. Women who are in the high risk category may want to know how far along am I as well. Some very crucial growth and development stages happen during the third trimester, and the longer you can carry your baby (or babies) the better. But thanks to advances in technology, medicine, and miracles, infants born as early 24 weeks have gone on to live and thrive.
Congratulations, you think (or know) you might be pregnant! But it’s quite confusing when you try to work out how many weeks pregnant you are.
That’s because of the way that doctors and midwives have traditionally calculated the ‘weeks pregnant’ you are, with 40 weeks being your due date.
Doctors and midwives generally discuss pregnancies in weeks, rather than months, so they can more accurately assess the progress and expected milestones of your baby throughout the pregnancy.
The average pregnancy is assumed to be a total of 40 weeks (that’s 280 days) from the first day of your last menstrual period (often shortened to ‘LMP.’)
Pregnancy is commonly referred to in terms of ‘gestational age’ rather than ‘fetal age development.’ When you think about it carefully, that means that the average gestation only goes for 38 weeks after fertilisation – and using this system, you are already two weeks ‘pregnant’ at the time of ovulation!
To work out how many weeks pregnant you are under the traditional system (which is still in use in most hospitals in Australia), just work forward from the first date of your last menstrual period.
Sometimes doctors and midwives talk about the ‘fetal age’ or use the ‘ovulation’ system of determining how many weeks pregnant you are, because it is more accurate than just guessing that you might have ovulated about 14 days after the first day of your last period.
The fetal age is the actual age of your baby – that is, how many weeks since the egg and sperm joined together in conception.
Thanks to technologies like ultrasound, as well as widely-available and far more accurate ovulation testing, fetal age can be determined much more easily and give you a better estimate of how many weeks pregnant you are.
If you have a much shorter or much longer menstrual cycle than the standard 28 days, using the standard gestational age ‘dates’ won’t quite match up with where your baby really should be, so fetal age can be more accurate.

Question by Newtothis: 9 weeks- first u/s yesterday, pregnancy symptoms (chills??), telling family, life etc?
Just went for an Ultra sound yesterday (because I was spotting for a couple weeks and thought I saw tissue when urinating). I had a previous missed miscarriage in July, so now a bit extra sensitive to anything since last time i bled a lot and it ended with a d&c.
Yesterday, saw the little one, heart beating and all, measuring 9 weeks 2 days. The tech showed me the monitor and I was like “Oh, cool”, didn’t want to let myself get too excited because still nervous after the last experience and being I really want to have children, I don’t want to get too excited. The tech probably thought I was crazy, lol, for not much of a reaction. ( I feel embarassed now I didn’t make a bigger deal, perhaps she probably thinks I’m insensitive not to be like so crazy and emotional over it, but still I told her that’s great, we’ll wait and see what happens)
I don’t plan on telling my family for another couple months until it’s very obvious (although I don’t see them more than once a month so it will be easy to hide it) . I just like to keep it between me and my husband for this time until it becomes visibly noticeable as I don’t want to get caught up int he middle of evil eyes, or any other jealous feelings that can come from others in a situation like this. I feel bad, my closest friends are all trying to get pregnant too, so i hope in the next month or so they all join me, i know it would make them sensitive and add to their own pressure of getting pregnant.
so, anyway, as for many, it’s the time where for a week now i’ve been feeling like crap.
my head spinning, constant headaches with nothing that works to dissolve it, i feel like i’m going to vomit (but luckly i quickly change the setting/mentality and i don’t), everything i use to eat alot and love, i now hate. EVEN WATER….i use to drink or try to atleast 8 bottles of it a day, now one or two, i know this is soo bad, i need the water, but i can’t stand drinking it or i feel like i will vomit. i sit here knowing i need to eat, but can’t think of anything that i could or want to eat because every food feels disgusting. i feel bad, i always cooked meals daily, my poor husband is living on sandwiches, because the simple things are all i can tolerate.
the chills though, i had chills back and forth for the last week, we had the heat on 75 (in michigan), i had the warmest clothes and was in my bed crying for more heat. then, i fell asleep to wake up sweating to death where i slept the rest of the night almost naked. i never experienced chills before, i may go get a new thermometer since the one we have doesn’t seem consistant (the one you put in your ear). assuming it’s the nausea that’s making my head feels warm, although i am actually cold. anyone have the chills?
not sure for this to have it checked out by the obgyn, or family doctor. i always hear chills are fighting infection, yet chills are normal for pregnant women too. i thought i had some kind of flu last week but after a week of consistant symptoms, i’m pretty sure it’s just pregnancy related.
so, any comments, suggestions?

Sounds like you may be suffering the onset of morning sickness. I went through a stage where I couldn’t even walk in some rooms of my house and when I walked through the front door I’d have to throw up from the smell (it wasn’t even a bad smell, just the weirdest smells would set me off.) I went off quite a few different foods and water made me nauseous. Google morning sickness for some of the solutions (although none worked for me!) If needed you can get a pill like maxalon from the doctor. It’s safe for your baby. And try adding something to your water like lemon or lime juice. Good luck!

Question by Roxanne R: What is the most accrete way to tell how many weeks pregnant I am.?
The first day of my last period was November 9,2009. I missed my period in December and took a home pregnancy test and it was negative. I thought my period was late but to be sure I wasn’t pregnant I went to see the doctor the 22nd of December. The Doctor did an pelvic exams and a vaginal ultra sound, and a urine test. I was told I was not pregnant. Feeling symptoms of tender breast, fatigue, weight gain, mood swing and even cravings I thought I could be pregnant. January 18th I decided to take a home test and it came out positive . Using several different online pregnancy calculators my due date came out to be August 17th. That would have made me 10 weeks and 5 days. January 20th I went to see my doctor. She used her chart and it said I would expect August 17th. She wanted to do a vaginal ultra sound and a pelvic exam. When she did the ultra sound she said she couldn’t see any baby.???? Thinking at this point maybe I could be pregnant in my tubs or maybe my home test was defect.I had no pain and no bleeding. I took another urine test and it was POSITIVE. She wanted to take a blood test to see how many pregnant hormones were in my blood. After the blood test she said I was 4 weeks and not 11weeks. Can I believe this since I am 100% positive of my date of last period? What other way could I find out how far along I am.
Best answer:
Answer by nickieandsarahsmommy
The doctors estimate is based on the first day of your last missed period. If you were supposed to start November 9 that would be considered the day you conceived. If you think that is not correct you can request an ultra sound to find out based on the size of the baby how far along you are.

Question by ♪ Patti Austin Fan ♪: If progesterone causes pregnancy symptoms then why do I only feel those symptoms when I try to conceive?
I am normally celibate from male/female sex. I do not have semen in me regularly. I get inseminated by a sperm donor. We already have a son from this man. I only feel bloating and tender breasts and other symptoms before possible implantation on the months I get the semen in me.
If the symptoms in the first 6 days after ovulation are caused by progesterone, where are these symptoms when we are not trying to conceive?
Please give me details of your pregnancies and two week wait symptoms. Thanks in advance.
And do you believe you can truly have symptoms before implantation?
Nah, I’m not more cognizant of the symptoms. I purposely took a month off and paid close attention to my body. I took notes on other non pregnant months. I do know that semen has a substance called prostaglandin that can create that bloating feeling.
Best answer:
Answer by Amanda
Pregnancy and PMS symptoms are the same. That is why people claim they have had pregnancy symptoms before implantation.
You have more than likely “only felt symptoms when trying to conceive” because you are more cognizant of them. Very often we don’t pay that much attention to every little twinge and ache until we are trying to get pregnant.

I took a pregnancy test yesterday and it came out positive. I started having morning sickness sunday. I have an irregular period so i dont know how many weeks pregnant i am! my period ended around December 6th ..
can anyone help me?

Answer by lupinesidhe
The best way to tell with your irregularity is probably going to be to go to the doctor and they will do an ultrasound and measure the baby and estimate your due date based on that. That’s what I had to do with my first baby.

Question by : Period a week late, A few Symptoms but Negative Pregnancy Test results?? CONFUSED!?
SO I’ve been on “the pill” for about 3 months now. but lets just say…my memory isnt all that good. because at one point i missed about 4 days & just took two pills a day til i caught up. during that time I’m not sure if i was ovulating, but i had ALOT of unprotected sex with my fiance.
well now i just finished my sugar pills on the pack, & my period is suppost to have started by now. [STILL NO PERIOD]
in the mean time…I’ve been getting cramps. idk, if its just running late & about to start or what.. My nipples are sore, i’ve been nauseated [no vomit] , fatigue, headaches, CONSTIPATION [& diarrhea] srry for the tmi, but its TRUE.
& weight gain. [i have a HIGH metabolism] so I can usually eat WHATEVER, WHENEVER. & not gain a single pound. but lately, i’ve been GAINING WEIGHT! [my mom told me i'm starting to look "normal" [cuz i've always been skinny, no matter what i eat, i never gain weight]
Do you think its possible for me to be pregnant? should I give it some more time before I take another test?
Best answer:
Answer by Marisa Cagle
Well wait a couple of days or a week and if you still don’t get your period then test again. I would continue to take birth control until I knew for sure that I was pregnant or not.

Question by Elaine: I am so confused by my ultrasound/pregnancy symptoms….?
I have two children already, so I know a bit about this topic, but I am soconfused now.
OK, first of all, I took a pregnancy test last week, and it was positive. I was about 3 days late for my period at that point. Later that same day, I began cramping and bleeding lightly (red blood, but very light flow). I am still cramping/bleeding, but it is not constant.
My doc was concerned so we did an ultrasound- the tech could not see anything, not even a sack. I have to go back to my doc to be screened for ectopic, but I have no symptoms other than the bleeding.
Has anyone had anything like this happen? I am very confused and freaked out. Thanks.
the bleeding is more like heavy spotting than a flow, if that makes any sense….
Best answer:
Answer by Liyah’s Mommy
Sounds like you had a spontaneous miscarriage. The bleeding is basically a period now. A lot of woman have this and confuse it with their period, so that they never know they were pregnant. I’m sorry and wish you the best of luck!
